Background of the Study

Cultural beliefs play a significant role in how mental health is perceived and treated in various societies. In Nigeria, traditional beliefs about mental illness often coexist with modern medical approaches, sometimes creating tension in the acceptance of psychiatric treatments. In many communities, mental health conditions may be seen as spiritual or supernatural issues, leading patients to seek out traditional healers rather than medical professionals (Ohaeri et al., 2023). This cultural perception can hinder individuals from accepting or adhering to psychiatric treatments, which in turn affects mental health outcomes.

In Borno State, where Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Maiduguri is located, there is a strong influence of Islamic and local cultural beliefs, which shape the way psychiatric illnesses are understood and treated. Despite the availability of psychiatric care at the hospital, there may be resistance to seeking help or following medical recommendations due to cultural stigma or the belief that mental health issues are a result of spiritual imbalance or witchcraft. Understanding how cultural beliefs influence the acceptance of psychiatric treatment is critical for improving mental health care and ensuring that patients receive the appropriate interventions.

Statement of the Problem

While psychiatric care is available at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri, cultural beliefs about mental illness may influence patients’ willingness to accept and engage with psychiatric treatments. This study aims to explore the role of cultural beliefs in the acceptance of psychiatric care among patients in Maiduguri, identifying barriers to treatment adherence and offering recommendations for overcoming cultural resistance.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of cultural beliefs in influencing the acceptance of psychiatric treatment among patients at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri.
  2. To identify common cultural beliefs about mental illness that affect treatment-seeking behavior in Borno State.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the acceptance of psychiatric treatment among patients influenced by cultural beliefs.

Research Questions

  1. How do cultural beliefs influence the acceptance of psychiatric treatment among patients at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri?
  2. What are the common cultural beliefs about mental illness that impact treatment-seeking behavior in Borno State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the acceptance of psychiatric care among patients influenced by cultural beliefs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Cultural beliefs significantly influence the acceptance of psychiatric treatment among patients in Maiduguri.
  2. Patients who hold strong traditional beliefs are less likely to accept psychiatric treatment and may prefer traditional healing methods.
  3. Educational interventions addressing cultural misconceptions about mental illness will increase the acceptance of psychiatric treatment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on patients at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri, and will explore cultural beliefs and their impact on the acceptance of psychiatric treatment. Limitations may include the challenge of gathering accurate data due to potential cultural sensitivities or stigmas, as well as the relatively small sample size.
